Travelers eager to begin their relaxing vacation in Barbados may decide that hiring a taxi is the simplest way to get around the island. Vehicles drive on the left side of the road, so visitors unfamiliar with the British style of driving often prefer to leave the driving to professionals, at least until they get a feel for things. Luckily, hired cars are widely available outside of airports and docks, and can be easily discerned by the letter ā€œZā€ that appears on their license plates.

As is the case on many Caribbean islands, cabs are not metered in Barbados. Rates are government regulated, however, with fees hovering around $20(USD) per hour. Visitors are advised to settle on a fare and currency before taking a taxi. (An exchange rate of 2 Barbadian dollars to 1 U.S. dollar makes the difference noteworthy.)

Below are some of the most common trips and their average rates. Travelers should note that additional surcharges may apply, such as waiting time and excess luggage. Those traveling with small children should bring their own child safety restraint devices as taxis will not provide them with you.

Trips (From - To)
Average Fare
Grantley Adams International Airport - St. Lawrence Gap $13(USD)
Grantley Adams International Airport - Bridgetown $18(USD)
Grantley Adams International Airport - Holetown $23(USD)
Grantley Adams International Airport - Speightstown $30(USD)
Bridgetown - St Lawrence Gap $13(USD)
Bridgetown - Holetown $13(USD)
Bridgetown - Speightstown $20(USD)
Bridgetown - Bathsheba $23(USD)

Most taxis can also be chartered for guided tours. Rates are then charged hourly and should be between $20(USD) and $25(USD), although the number of passengers can sometimes affect the rate.

Government regulated fares and knowledgeable drivers make taxis an appealing option for travelers who don't want to bother with parking, gas prices, and the confusion of unfamiliar streets. Taxis are just one of the many ways to find your way around Barbados, and their convenience and reliability are ideal for a carefree vacation.
